Officer accused of racism
New information on allegations that a Henrico Police captain used a racially insensitive term to describe a suspect. Now, the NAACP is calling for action. Henrico's police chief has taken some initial action against that officer. Sources say it's Henrico Captain Jan Stem.
The Virginia state conference of the NAACP wants Henrico Police to make the results of its investigation public.
Speaking outside his Richmond office, King Salim Kahlfani wonders about the context in which a Henrico officer allegedly uttered the "n" word in reference to a police suspect.
Police sources say Captain Jan Stem used the racially insensitive term a few weeks ago. Stem has been unavailable for comment.
Since last week, the incident has roiled the rank and file officers, causing racial tension at police headquarters.
Khalfani says he wants to know exactly how police choose to handle this situation.
Khalfani says he has greater concerns about Henrico County's hiring practices and how often it uses minority firms.
