Man sentenced in police dog shooting

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A man who fatally injured a police
dog during a burglary in the Charlottesville area was sentenced to
10 years in prison after a judge heard testimony from the German
shepherd's handler.
Robert Lee Cooke of Chesterfield was shot during an October 2004
exchange of gunfire with Ingo's handler, leaving Cooke paralyzed
from the waist down. The dog had to be put down because of its
injuries.
Cooke was sentenced yesterday in Albemarle Circuit Court. He got
five years for injuring the police dog and five years for a gun
violation. Cooke also was ordered to pay five-thousand dollars in
restitution to cover the cost of the dog.
Andy Gluba, the officer who shot Cooke, told the court that he
and his family had to undergo counseling after Ingo's death.
In April, jurors found Cooke guilty of maliciously wounding a
police dog.

what? Shooting the dog only got him 5 years? Animal or human, it's still a cop, in my opinion... and murdering any cop should earn a lot more than 5 years.

I would be amazed if the sentence was anything like that in the UK...
Police dogs aren't given the credit they deserve in my country...
If any UK cops on here, can remember or post an outcome from a K9 death, i'd be interested...'The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil,

He'd also have got the sentences concurrently, not consecutively, so he'd only serve five, not ten, here. Oh, and we'd automatically cut his sentence in half and release him after two and a half

The two cases I know of in the UK which resulted in the Police dogs retirement weren't charged for any offences related to the dog.
One was charged GBH against the handler and failing to stop for Police.
The other resulted in the death of the handler but was charged as manslaughter he also got time for disqualified driving and theft related offences.

On 7 January after a stolen car was abandoned in Bulwell, Nottingham, England the officer, a dog handler, gave chase on foot with his dog; he attempted to arrest the suspect as he drove away in another car, the officer was dragged along the road by the car and suffered serious head injuries from which he later died.
A 25 year old man was charged with murder but convicted of manslaughter for which he was sentenced to 12 years imprisonment.
