CONSTABLE GLASSED AT WORLD CUP MATCH PUB

A Special constable was glassed in the face trying to break up a fight after England's World Cup win against Trinidad and Tobago.

The 45-year-old had been called to the Arrow pub in Gedling Road, Arnold,

when less than an hour after the match finished, a fight broke out between two men inside the pub.

As he tried to intervene, the special constable was hit in the face with a glass, causing head injuries. He was treated at the Queen's Medical Centre and later released.

Police cleared pub and closed it for the rest of the evening while investigations were carried out. Officers want to speak to anyone who saw the fight.

Chief Superintendent Peter Moyes, divisional commander for south Notts, said: "This is a deplorable attack on a volunteer member of [our] staff who was engaged in trying to maintain order while people were out enjoying themselves. This type of violent, thuggish behaviour will not be tolerated and I would urge anyone with information to come forward."

No one from the pub was available for comment, but a spokesman for owners and operators The Spirit Group said: "We closed the pub for the remainder of the evening in cooperation with the police."

Shocked pub regular Neil Spick, from Arnold, said: "It sounds like a mix of a lot of football and drink. I am surprised as I've come here for years and it is usually very quiet."
