    A guard at a federal detention center opened fire as investigators came to arrest six corrections officers Wednesday, starting a gunfight that killed two workers and injured another, the FBI said.

    FBI agents and Justice Department investigators were at the center to serve arrest warrants when one of the six guards shot a federal correctional institution officer, said FBI spokesman John Girgenti.

    Girgenti said an officer fired back. He declined to comment on whether the shooter was among the victims. Tallahassee police said earlier that the shooter was in custody.

    The condition of the survivor and identities of the victims were not immediately released.

    "The community is safe. The institution is in lockdown status," federal Bureau of Prisons spokeswoman Carla Wilson said.

    The detention center houses mostly men and is part of the Tallahassee Federal Correctional Institution. A low security prison for female inmates is next to the detention center. Together the men's and women's units total 1,445 inmates.

    One agent, one local guard killed (video, photos)
    http://www.tdo.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...GNEWS/60621009

    12:15 p.m. update
    Two federal employees were shot and killed this morning when federal agents tried to arrest six employees of the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee.

    One of the people killed was a federal agent serving the arrest warrant; the other was one of the subjects of the indictement, who was working at the Federal Detention Center where the 7:40 a.m. shooting took place, according to a spokesman for the FBI in Jacksonville.

    "One of the subjects who was shot and killed was a subject of the warrant," said Rick Dent. "The other was a federal agent with the Departmet of Justice Office of the Inspector General."

    A third person, an employee of the Bureau of Prisons in Tallahassee, was also shot, Dent said. The third shooting victim, who was not a subject of the warrant, was taken to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, said Tallahassee Police Department spokesman John Newland.

    According to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tallahassee, a grand jury returned an indictment Tuesday charging the six corrections officers of "using their position to obtain money from inmates in exchange fro introducing contraband into the prison." The indictement alleges that the conspiracy has been going on since 2003.

    The charges against Alfred Barnes, Gregory Dixon, Ralph Hill, Vincent Johnson, Alan Moore and E. Lavon Spence are:

    • engaging in a conspiracy to commit acts of bribery;
    • witness tampering;
    • mail fraud;
    • and interstate transportation in aid of racketeering.

    If found guilty they could face 20 years in prison.

    A spokeswoman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington, DC said the three people were shot inside Tallahassee's Federal Detention Center, which is adjacent to the Federal Correctional Institution on Capital Circle.

    Carla Wilson said inmates were not involved in the shooting.

    "There were no inmates involved in this incident," she said. "The institution is on lock-down. There is no threat to the community."

    The correctional institution is a low security womens' prison that houses about 1,400 inmates, Wilson said. The detention center is a jail for men that has about 205 inmates.

    The two share some of the same staff, she said.

    More information is expected to be released shortly when local and federal law enforcement agencies hold a press conference at the detention center.

    HOLY SHIT... Was just talking about this at work last night.
    In law enforcement, the customer is ALWAYS wrong.

    In God we trust. Everyone else is run through NCIC.

    Sometimes there is justice. Sometimes there is just us.

    I'd rather be tried by 12 then carried by 6.

    From the same article link as I posted above.

    "1:56 p.m. update
    Attorney Timothy Jansen has confirmed that his client, Ralph Hill, was the local guard who started the shooting and was killed during the incident.

    Hill was one of the six guards set to be arrested by federal agents at the Federal Correctional Institution this morning.

    The shooting took place in the lobby of the detention center."

    Exclamation Two dead in Florida prison gunfight

    TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Reuters) - An attempt to arrest federal prison guards on sex-for-contraband charges erupted in a gunfight that killed a U.S. Justice Department agent and one of the guards on Wednesday, the FBI said.

    Agents were trying to arrest six male guards at a federal detention center in Tallahassee on charges that included giving female prisoners alcohol, drugs and money in exchange for sex, an investigator said.

    Five guards had been arrested when the sixth, Ralph Hill, retrieved his personal gun and opened fire, officials with the FBI and U.S. Bureau of Prisons said.

    The arresting officers returned fire and two people were shot to death -- Hill and Buddy Sentner, an agent with the Justice Department's Office of the Inspector General, the federal officials said.

    Another prison worker was shot and taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition, they said.

    Guards are not permitted to bring personal weapons on the grounds and investigators said they did not know how Hill got his gun into the prison. They said the guards had not been told about the indictments.

    "This is a sad day for law enforcement," said Michael Folmer, FBI special agent in charge of the investigation. "These agents were just out trying to do their job, trying to do an arrest in a very controlled situation and it just didn't go down exactly as planned."

    Prison spokeswoman Carla Wilson said no inmates were involved in the shooting and the facility had been secured.

    The six guards were indicted on Tuesday for conspiring to commit bribery, witness tampering, mail fraud and interstate transportation in aid of racketeering, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tallahassee.

    The suspects had conspired for nearly three years to trade contraband for sex, and sometimes swapped work assignments and moved inmates around in order to carry out the scheme, the indictment said.

    Five of the guards, including Hill, were accused of having sex with female prisoners and the sixth was accused of trying to dissuade a prisoner from cooperating with investigators.

    The indictment said prisoners were given contraband in exchange for sex or in exchange for acting as lookouts or keeping quiet about the violations. Guards threatened to plant forbidden items among inmates' belongings or have them sent to prisons far from their families unless they cooperated, the indictment said.

    The shootout took place in the lobby of the Federal Detention Center in the Florida state capital, which holds men for short-term incarceration. It is adjacent to the Federal Correctional Institution, where female prisoners are held.

    The guards worked at both facilities, prison officials said.

    The five surviving suspects were arraigned on Wednesday and were scheduled to go before a judge for bond hearings on Thursday. They would face 20 years in prison if convicted, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

    Not that this means anything, but the only murder that's ever occured on my street was committed by a C.O. / Bailiff, 3 houses down from me.

    I guess that just proves that everyone's human, and anyone can break under the right conditions.

    They merged the 2 posts that were on the other duplicate thread (that was created tonight by BigBossMan, AFTER your thread from this morning) into your thread.

    Ok, here is a quick update... The information we got at work says the C/O that was doing the shooting had been working the control center which is at the front of the institution. The OIG Investigator and a Lt. from the BOP were in the control room escorting the C/O out to the lobby where he was going to be arrested by FBI Agents. Once out of the control room and in the sallyport leading into the lobby area, the C/O pulled his weapon and shot the Lt. At the sametime, the OIG Investigator drew his weapon and which time the C/O and OIG Investigator shot each other. Both as you know died of a single gun shot wound.

    Now, because of this incident all us officers may be searched before we start our shifts. Leave it to a few "dirty" C/O's to mess it up for all of us that work our ass's off behind the walls!
