Alleged Tagger Breaks Neck In Attempted Escape
Juveniles Caught On Roof At 3 A.M.

CHICAGO -- One juvenile is hospitalized, reportedly with a broken neck, after he tried to escape police and jumped from the roof of a building he was “tagging” with two other juveniles who were in police custody early Wednesday on the Near South Side.

The juveniles were scrawling graffiti symbols atop a tire remanufacturing company near the railroad tracks at Cermak and Western about 3 a.m. when one of them jumped from the building to avoid police capture, said Ogden District Lt. Sam Cozzo.

"One of them got real stupid [and jumped]," Cozzo said.

The one who jumped, a male, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition, police News Affairs Officer Kelly Liakopoulos said. According to a Harrison District lieutenant, the boy broke his neck when he jumped.

The other two, who were taken down from the building, were in custody at Harrison Area headquarters as of 4:45 a.m., said Cozzo. They were charged with misdemeanors, Liakopoulos said.

Union Pacific Railroad police called to alert authorities of the three, Liakopoulos added. Further information was not immediately available.
