DALLAS -- Police say an off-duty officer in Highland Park was injured Wednesday after he fired shots while clinging onto a vehicle being driven by a suspect.
The officer, who was working security, suffered minor injuries in the incident at about 12:30 p.m. at Lemmon Avenue and Lomo Alto Drive.
The suspect tried to write a bad check and was leaving the Whole Foods Market when the officer went after him, police said.
The suspect pushed a female passenger out of the car and drove about 50 yards while the officer hung onto the driver-side door with his arm, police said. The officer then fired shots into the car and shot the suspect at least three times.
The suspect is recovering at Parkland Hospital. The officer was taken to Baylor Medical Center with minor injuries.
Highland Park police planned to question the woman who was with the suspect.

I do agree with you all, but isn't it a carjacking now that he pushed the female out of the car and took off?

I'll find out. That's the same place my LT works his off duty gig. Those Highland Park fellas are kinda batty anyway. If you'll remember they arrested the 80 YO grandma last year for warrants. Cuffed her and stuffed her. If you work for Highland Park.........hell, I was gonna apologize, but even they know they're ate up.

But on the bright side, they let Jerry Jones go in his little incident... Or was that the University Park police several years ago?

This scenario reminded me of reservists (no offense intended to anyone ) back in the day when they had maybe a week or two of classes , would go out and buy two way radios showing thier reserve card they could go to a shop and get the freqs put in their radios ,and a weapon and for a couple of weeks after every "" graduation "" ( cough ) class , we had problems with them really doing dumb things , calling officer down or needs asst and we would show up and their arguing with someone parked illegally or as above jumping into someones window to keep them from driving off but it was never anything for even a felony or a misdemeanor by any stretch of the imagination. Now days , i think the reserve classes are better ??
As for jumping in that vehicle , im not jumping nor firing , he is lucky he didnt lose his weapon or the perp got hold of it while he was trying to hang on .

I saw another report on it last night... It sounded justified, in that the officer's clothing may have gotten hung on something as he reached into the car to grab the guy, who then sped away, dragging the officer with him, and he wouldn't stop.

Was he acting as an officer or security guard? Was carrying the gun part of the security uniform or was he carrying because he was an off duty officer?

Fingers crossed he'll pull through ok..
In the UK cops can't work as security guards. Just out of interest.'The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil,
but because of those who look on and do nothing.'

We can work security if hired through our dept. We often work bars and what not. But we are still Police. In Our Police Uniform, with our police car, and in our jurisdiction. We would not be permitted to work for a security company

Something fishy here. Worthless check? I ain't breaking a sweat for that. Sorry.

for thee, My Lord, for thee,
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy Command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls will it ever be.

The officer was working security for the grocery store, but in my mind, as soon as a crime was committed, he certainly has my permission to act as a peace officer, not that he needs it... A bad guy off the streets!
According to the report I saw on TV, he only had scrapes, bumps & bruises from being dragged... Thank goodness. He coulda been run over or something.Last edited by TXCharlie; 06-29-06 at 09:42 AM.
