SALT LAKE CITY -- An Omaha sailor is missing after falling from an aircraft carrier off the east coast of Japan.
Airman Jason J. Doyle, 19, of Omaha -- and previously of Sunset, Utah -- fell from the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk about 4:49 p.m. Saturday. Navy officials said search and rescue efforts began immediately and are to continue until Wednesday if necessary.
Doyle's aunt, Louise Weilenmann of Salt Lake City, said the family was notified by the Navy on Saturday evening.
Doyle was assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 136, which flies Prowler electronic attack aircraft.

The Navy said he fell into the water while the ship was conducting routine flight operations.

They just updated his status to "Lost at Sea"

People just don't fall off an air craft carrier, do they?

07-24-06, 12:12 AM #7Unfortunately that actually does happen on ocassion. I was in the Navy, and on a large ship like a carrier a person could fall overboard and not be noticed for a few hours. My condolaces to the family. Smoke and prayers for the family and the young man. On a carrier on the flightdeck their are no safety lines ( these are steel cables that prevent personel and equipment from going overboard) like on other ships, the reason on the carrier is because of flight operations, the flightdeck is the most dangerous place on a carrier.
