Man injured in police-involved shooting
July 23, 2006
FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS
A 21-year-old man has been injured after a police involved shooting on the Southside in the Englewood neighborhood early Sunday morning.
As members of the Wentworth Area Gang Team responding to reports of shots fired arrived at intersection of 60th and Bishop Streets about 1:30 a.m. the yencountered a suspect on the west side of the street firing shots towards the east side of the street, according to police News Affairs Deputy Director Pat Camden.
Police got out of the car, took cover and called out for the suspect to drop the weapon, he said. The suspect then turned and pointed the gun at police, said Camden. Officers then shot the man twice in the leg.
The injured suspect was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was listed in good condition, Camden said. There were no officers injured in the shooting.
Police recovered a 9mm semi-automatic weapon from the scene.
“We are canvassing the area to make sure there were no civilians injured by the suspect’s gunfire,” Camden said.
Police continue to investigate the incident and a roundtable discussion will take place late Sunday morning to determine whether the officers acted within departmental guidelines.
