Maryland Officer Shoots, Arrests Man

Maryland authorities said the man shot by an officer of the Prince George's County Police department Wednesday night has died.

Officials said the officer responded to an emergency call about 11 p.m. in the 6800 block of Central Avenue for a report of a suspicious person armed with a handgun, loitering in front of the address.

"The individual matching the description fleeing the scene in a vehicle at a high rate of speed. The officers followed the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Officers were able to stop the vehicle, and as they approached the vehicle, they saw the suspect reaching for something," said Lt. Terence Sheppard of the Prince George's County Police department. He failed to comply with the officers demands to show his hands. During the confrontation an officer discharged his hand gun striking the suspect. The suspect then fled the scene inside the vehicle,"

Police have identified the man as 24-year-old Edward Bennett Douglass, of the 100 block of Daimler Drive.

Officials said the wounded man drove off and made it to Silver Hill Road, where he crashed his car, bailed out and started running.

He was apprehended and transported to an area hospital, police said.

"Subsequently a search of the vehicle revealed a loaded handgun," Sheppard said.

Police said the officer was not injured. Officials said the officer has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
