Another underage male student/hot female teacher sex scandal

Much of the testimony prosecutors had hoped to introduce in the first-degree sexual assault trial of former Greenwood teacher Deanna Bobo was ruled inadmissible Tuesday at a pretrial hearing.

The hearing was held to consider motions by the state and the defense regarding what testimony jurors will be allowed to hear when the case goes to trial Sept. 18 in Sebastian County Circuit Court. Bobo, 38, is accused of having sex with a male student younger than 18 last year.

After hearing testimony from 20 witnesses called by the state, Judge Norman Wilkinson said the testimony of at least 11 of the witnesses was inadmissible. He said he would issue a written ruling later specifying what testimony he considered admissible.

One of the witnesses refused to answer questions, invoking his Fifth Amendment right not to incriminate himself. Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Dan Shue told the judge he could not think of any way the witness could incriminate himself.

Wilkinson allowed the witness to step down and said he would take up that issue at a later hearing. He set a tentative date of Aug. 21 for the hearing.

Five of the witnesses who did testify at the hearing said they had sex or sexual contact with Bobo while they were minors.

Steve Gentry said he met Bobo when she was a substitute teacher in his class at Western Grove school in Newton County, and they began a relationship while he was 17. He said he moved in with Bobo after graduating in 1991, and they married in 1992. The couple later divorced.

Another witness said he had sex with Bobo while he was a student at Western Grove in the early 1990s. Three others said they had sex or sexual contact with Bobo while they were students at Wells Junior High School in Greenwood, where Bobo taught from 2000 to 2005.

Shue argued that those witnesses’ testimony was admissible under the Arkansas’ “pedophile exception,” which allows evidence of other acts to be admitted in a case of alleged sexual abuse against a child if the evidence shows a proclivity toward similar acts against the same person or class of people.

Defense attorney Dan Stewart argued that the risk of the testimony confusing or prejudicing a jury outweighed its probative value, and that the testimony of two of the witnesses was not relevant because it concerned acts that allegedly occurred as much as 15 years ago.

Wilkinson said he would not admit testimony about acts that allegedly occurred when Bobo was teaching in Newton County, but he was inclined to admit testimony about the other alleged sexual acts.

Eight witnesses testified that they witnessed unusual behavior by Bobo while they were her students or were attending the school where she taught.

One witness said he saw Bobo sitting with her legs apart while wearing a skirt and no underwear.

Defense attorney Shannon Foster sat in a chair facing the 17-year-old witness, moved her legs apart and asked, “Can you tell if I’m wearing underwear or not?”

“No,” the witness said.

Foster asked the boy to describe exactly what he saw under Bobo’s skirt, but he did not answer. Foster stopped her cross-examination when the boy appeared to be starting to cry.

Another witness said he walked into a classroom and saw two male students touching Bobo in the “breast area.”

Foster said the witness previously told police he saw Bobo touching the boys. “Which is it?” she asked.

“All I am saying is, there was a lot of action going on,” the witness said.

Witnesses also testified that Bobo invited male students to come to her house while her husband was away; said she would wear “sexy clothes” when the students came to her house; told students she was wearing a thong; sat behind a male student and twirled his hair; and wore low-cut tops to school.

Several witnesses testified that a male student stuck a cardboard tube into the front of his pants as a joke, and Bobo grabbed the tube and said it was not real.

Two witnesses testified that they saw a male student “scooping” Bobo, which was defined as giving her breast an upward flip. The student was not punished, the witnesses said.

Larry Gant, a counselor with the Arkansas Department of Community Correction, and Jackie Hamilton, coordinator for the Sebastian-Crawford Multidisciplinary Team on Child Sexual Abuse, testified that Bobo appeared to have been “grooming” students to become victims of abuse.

Wells Junior High Principal Kevin Hesslen and teachers Angela Miller and Connie Williams testified about Bobo’s behavior as a teacher. Williams, who co-taught special education students with Bobo, said she heard Bobo tell a male student that green M&Ms “make you horny.”

Wilkinson ruled that testimony about what Gant described as “grooming behavior” would not be admitted. The judge said he would allow testimony from Hesslen, Miller and Williams and would allow testimony about the “scooping” incident, which he said appeared to be an action by a student, not Bobo.

During a closed portion of the hearing, Wilkinson heard testimony the defense wants to introduce about the sexual history of the alleged victim in the case. The judge did not rule on that issue Tuesday.

Shue asked Wilkinson to exclude any testimony about Bobo’s character that does not concern traits pertinent to the case. Wilkinson said he would take up that issue at the Aug. 21 hearing.

All we had were beasts for teachers, i wish we had a sexy teachers, maybe i would i like high school better if they would have done things like this.

Yup, That is true, Virgin. But only because Reca, Tony, and I found the cameras you set up outside our houses. That is sick, man. Further more, if you are going to set up cameras, don't put "Property of Virginian" on the bottom of the cameras.

Now, beyond that, I may believe in a double standard, but is there a real crime here? This is a horny teenage male. She obviously had a bad relationship or two and wanted someone more maleable (intentional sp).
