Fired DJ files defamation suit against New York councilman
By MARCUS FRANKLIN
NEW YORK, Aug. 2 — A former radio disc jockey fired after he threatened a rival's young daughter in on-air rants filed a multimillion-dollar defamation lawsuit Wednesday against a city councilman who called the DJ a pedophile.
DJ Star, whose real name is Troi Torain, wants the councilman to pay for calling him a ''sick racist pedophile,'' a ''lunatic'' and a ''criminal,'' among other names, in public statements and on cable TV shows, according to his $55 million federal civil lawsuit.
New York City Councilman John C. Liu, who said he hadn't been served with the suit papers but had read reporters' copies of it, remained critical of Torain.
''I hold myself accountable to the statements I've made,'' he said Wednesday. ''Any grown man who states in the most public of ways that they would like to have sex with ... a little girl — that in my book is a sick pedophile. I'm grateful that this person is now targeting me instead of little girls. Let's hope it stays that way.''
Last week, a judge adjourned the case against Torain for six months, when endangering the welfare of a child and weapon possession charges will be dropped as long as he stays out of further trouble.
Prosecutors agreed to that resolution, saying it best served the interests of the 4-year-old girl by sparing her further attention.
Torain called the outcome a victory for freedom of speech. He was fired May 10 from WWPR-FM, or Power 105.1, after the incident.
''I don't know what Liu's agenda is, but enough's enough,'' Torain said in an interview. ''He's not a judge. This has to be brought to a halt.''
Torain, 42, sued in federal court, rather than state court, because he lives in Pennsylvania while Liu, a Democrat, lives in New York's borough of Queens.
