Felon denied permission for AR-15 silencer by Chief, decides to blow up the station
POPLARVILLE — Poplarville authorities said the man responsible for the arson attack at the city's police department was angry because officials would not sign paper work allowing the suspect to buy a silencer for an assault rifle.
Xiao Chen Lin, 21, came to the police station on Friday to ask for a signature from the police chief to purchase an AR 15 suppresser, or silencer, Capt. Rossie Creel said.
The chief ran Lin's record to ensure he was not convicted of any crimes but found he is a convicted felon in the state of New York, Creel said.
When the chief refused to sign the document and kept the paper work, Lin left the department upset, Creel said.
The next night at about 2:30 a.m., two officers in the building heard an explosion that shook the building, Creel said. They found the rear of a city-owned trailer on fire.
Police served a search warrant for Lin's residence and seized a cache of nine weapons and body armor, Creel said.
Also in the residence was evidence supporting the department's belief that Lin was involved in the arson attempt, Creel said.
Lin was arrested and charged with arson. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will file federal charges for the possession of the three high-powered rifles, a shotgun and five hand guns, Creel said.

I guess that means the Chief made the correct decision, but should have inquired further about why a felon would need a silencer if he isn't supposed to have a gun.

Nice. ATF does work sometimes.

What a stupid ass. First you are a convicted felon and are in illegal possession of firearms. Now you think you can go to the chief's office and get signature for a silencer tax stamp and not think that someone is going to run you on the computer? What an imbecil!! Glad no one got hurt at the police station.

Well I'm not sure if it has actually passed yet or not. But I know just a year or two ago in NC it was legal (state law) for a convicted felon to have a weapon on his property to protect it. Even though the federal law said he couldn't have one period. I wonder if its like that there too.
NC was talking about changing their law to match the feds, just not sure if they did or not."An Unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it." Jeff Cooper

It's probably that sort of behaviour that got him refused in the first place.
The chief did a good job there
