Off-duty officer being questioned after Northwest Plaza shooting

(KMOV) - St. Louis County homicide detectives are questioning an off-duty Berkely officer after he shot and killed a man inside Northwest Plaza.

Witnesses say the shooting followed an argument in a clothing store between the two men.


Witnesses say the incident started inside the Man Alive clothing store sometime after 2 p.m. According to the assistant manager of the store, the man spit in the direction of the off-duty police officer. The assistant manager said he called 911.


The witness says the off-duty officer pulled out his gun and began chasing the man around of store. They ran out a rear emergency exit of the store into a back hallway.


Witnesses say they heard at least one shot. The man was shot in the chest. He died at the scene.


The officer said the man who was shot bumped into him repeatedly and tried to grab his gun and he was shot during a struggle.


St. Louis County Police are investigating different accounts of the incident. They are also looking into whether the officer and the other man had any prior relationship.


St. Louis County Police spent hours questioning witnesses including the police officer, but county investigators have refused to answer many questions about the case on camera.
