The driver, a 33-year-old U.S. citizen, presented officers with a valid California driver's license and birth certificate. Officials said the inspector noticed that the driver was acting nervous and ordered the driver into secondary inspection.

A closer inspection of the van uncovered two men and a woman crammed into the seats under the upholstery, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The illegal immigrants were removed from the seats. The driver is being charged with smuggling.
