Robbery Attempt Foiled By Victims One Attacker Dead

(STNG) CHICAGO Two robbery victims turned the tables on their attackers early Saturday when they shot one with his own gun, killing him, and subdued another until police arrived.

The attempted armed robbery occurred around 5:40 a.m. Saturday on the 1200 block of North Karlov Street, according to police News Affairs Officer Kristina Schuler.

According to police, a man and a woman were standing on the street waiting for a bus when two men, 24 and 31, approached them with a gun and announced a robbery, Schuler said.

Instead of complying with their demands, one of the victims fought back and began to struggle with the alleged robber’s gun, she said. The gun went off, wounding the attacker, Jon Diego Sylvester, 31, of unidentified home address, who then walked over to a waiting car, Schuler said.

Another man was in the car and drove Sylvester to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was later pronounced dead at 6:20 a.m., according to a spokesman with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Police were looking for the driver of the getaway car Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the victims held down the other attacker until police arrived, Schuler said. As police were arresting the man, another man walked up to police and informed them that the men had robbed him minutes earlier, stealing his wallet and watch.

The getaway driver was described between 25 and 30-years-old, around 6 feet tall, and weighing between 250 and 275 pounds.

The dead man’s identity was not available Saturday as of 5:26 p.m., pending family notification, according to a spokesman from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Charges had not been presented against the man police arrested as of 5 p.m., Schuler said.

The intended robbery victims were not injured in the scuffle and no property was stolen from them, she said.
