Suspect questioned in Riverdale murderElderly man found dead

September 21, 2006 - Riverdale police are questioning a suspect in the murder of an elderly man. The 80-year-old was found dead in his home. Police call the case a robbery gone wrong.

"That's what it was, he was in the house, and the victim was down in the basement, while he was going through his things. He came upstairs, surprised him. And a struggle ensued," Sgt. Dan Dempsey, Riverdale Police Department.
The suspect reportedly had the elderly victim's keys and checkbook on him when he was arrested.

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy to make sure this crime is a homicide. The 20-year-old suspect confessed on videotape, police said.

So here is what happened. Dolton, IL PD (neighboring suburb) was looking for this guy, who supposedly stays over in Riverdale. When Riverdale picks him up on unrelated charges he has a checkbook in his pocket. So they go to the address on the checks and find the back door kicked in and the body. Good work on officers part. Most people I know wouldn't even bother checking into it.

Our guys always check at residences when they find stolen property.

That's very sad about the elderly male, but wonderful they caught the guy.

Do they stack charges there?

They will at the Grand Jury trial.

Good!

I ask, because when I lived in Texas, they only charged on the most serious offense. Here in Cali, they look for as many things as possible to charge them with.
