Police Officers put themselves at risk for strangers every day. Some do not make it home to their families. Next time you think of saying something negative about the police, remember...YOU are one of the strangers.

    Police officer shot in Montgomery

A Montgomery police officer was critically injured this afternoon after he pulled over a vehicle and was shot in the face, authorities said.

As of 3:30 p.m., the officer was still alive, but in critical condition at Jackson Hospital.

Capt. Huey Thornton, spokesman with the Montgomery Police Department, said the officer's wife and her sister are at the hospital and state troopers picked up the officer's parents in Birmingham and are escorting them to Montgomery.

Thornton said the officer was working an overtime traffic enforcement around 12:40 p.m. in the 1800 block of North Decatur Street stopped a gray Chevrolet resembling either an Impala or Malibu.

Thornton said the officer approached the vehicle and the suspect pointed a gun at him and shot him.

Police located a suspect, Eldrick McNeal, in a sandpit off Decatur Street shortly before 3 p.m. this afternoon. They are looking for more suspects.

In addition to the gray Chevrolet, police are also looking for a white car that was headed toward downtown.

Three schools were under a lockdown for more than two hours while police searched for a suspect or suspects — Booker T. Washington Magnet High School, 632 S. Union St., Chisholm Elementary School, 307 E. Vandiver Blvd. and Highland Gardens Elementary School, 2801 Willena Avenue.

A spokesman with Jackson Hospital said Michael Briddell, an executive assistant to Mayor Bobby Bright, will hold a press conference within an hour at the hospital’s emergency room.

Parent Georgia Linto said she had not been aware of what happened when she came to the school to pick up her daughter Anna from Highland Gardens Elementary School.

“I saw the helicopter flying overhead but I didn’t know what happened until my daughter told me,” Linto said.

Anna, 10, said she did not know a policeman had been shot, but school officials told students someone may try to get into the building and the doors had to be locked.

“I was really scared, especially when I heard someone jiggling the door handle,” Anna said. “I hid under my desk.”

Linto said she felt better to know the school shut it’s doors when a potential threat emerged. Parents have to hit a buzzer to be let into the school.

Check back for more details as soon as they develop.

    Shot Montgomery officer identified

Mayor Bobby Bright announced Thursday evening that Montgomery Police Officer Keith Houts, 30, was shot during a traffic stop earlier in the day.

Bright confirmed that Houts is in critical condition and police are still looking for suspects in the shooting.

A man questioned earlier in the day was released.

“Want to serve notice to the criminal aspects of Montgomery, we have several leads. We will catch this guy and will prosecute him to the hilt,” Bright said at a 6 p.m. press conference held outside Jackson Hospital, where Houts is being treated.

Bright said Houts was shot once in the head and was not stable enough to go through surgery. Houts' parents were at the hospital and waiting for his wife to arrive.

“We stressed to them (police officers) that no matter how trivial the incident is, always be prepared for something like this,” Bright said.

Houts has been a Montgomery Police officer for two years. He and his wife also serve as reservists, each having served a tour of duty in Iraq, Bright said.

The mayor said that Houts' wife told him they went through a tragic event in Iraq. Bright added that was a shame that they had to go through something like this in Montgomery.

“We have terrorists roaming our streets and they are no better,” Bright said. “We somehow have to unclog the criminal justice system.”
