Cop tried to deposit $1 million check

Prosecutor: Had fake check from fake settlement

    September 29, 2006
    BY STEFANO ESPOSITO Staff Reporter
"What was she thinking?" Cook County Judge Matthew Coghlan wondered aloud Thursday as he sat, eyebrows raised, at the 26th and California courthouse.
It was a question on quite a few minds, as a Chicago Police officer appeared in court accused of trying to deposit a bogus $1 million check the officer allegedly claimed she'd received from Six Flags theme parks as part of a lawsuit settlement.

Tiffany M. Brown, 34, is charged with forgery and attempted theft by deception. Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Erin Antonietti told Coghlan that Brown had tried to deposit the check Aug. 31 at the Chicago Patrolman's Federal Credit Union in the 1300 block of West Washington.

    'Maintains her innocence'
Teller Samara Galvan was working when Brown strolled in wearing civilian clothing. "I thought it was weird," Galvan said. "If it would have been a lawsuit against Great America, I'm sure it would have been on the news."
Galvan said she knew there was something wrong with the check because it didn't have the correct routing numbers. Brown allegedly showed the teller a letter with details of the settlement, prosecutors said.

An inquiry with Six Flags officials showed both the check and the lawsuit were phony, Antonietti said.

Coghlan set Brown's bail at $10,000.

Outside the courtroom, Brown's attorney, Edith K. Dibbin, said only, "She maintains her innocence."

Monique Bond, a Chicago Police spokeswoman, said Brown has been with the department since November 1999 and most recently with the Calumet District. She is on paid leave, Bond said.

I bet her defence is that it's the job's fault.
She was picked on at work, they were trying to force her out, she was stressed out, blah blah blah blah.
