A Cleveland teacher was arrested Friday after Johnston Sheriff's officials learned she allegedly had sex with an 11-year-old student in 2003.

According to The News & Observer, the teacher also had an affair with the boy's father.
Tammy Amaon, a sheriff's office spokeswoman, said Rebecca Sue Withrow, 30, of 265 Cambridge Drive, Clayton, is charged with first-degree rape of a child, indecent liberties with a child and sex offense with a student. She is accused of performing sex acts with one of her fifth-grade students at Polenta Elementary School near Cleveland.

"Yes, she was his fifth-grade teacher," Mrs. Amaon said. "It happened back in 2003, but it just came to light. (The student) confided in his mom and she reported it to the sheriff's department and the school system."

Ms. Withrow, 26 at the time of the alleged rape, resigned her position with Johnston County Schools during the investigation.

According to a police report, Ms. Withrow is not married and has no children. She is currently unemployed.

The alleged sex acts took place between Feb. 1, 2003, and June 10, 2003, a press release from the sheriff's office said.

Ms. Withrow turned herself in Friday afternoon and is held in the Johnston County Jail under $750,000 bond.

Her first court appearance was yesterday morning, where a motion to reduce her bond was denied. The court appointed attorney Chad Lee to handle the rest of the trial.

Ms. Withrow's next appearance in court is Oct. 26, where she will face a probable cause hearing.

Several other female teachers have been charged or convicted in similar cases across the nation.

Florida teacher Debra LaFave, 24, grabbed the headlines last year for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old student, claiming a bi-polar condition caused her to commit the crime.

I wonder what this one will come up with for a defense on why she did it. I'll bet anything it will be because of something that happened in her child hood eons ago.
