I was planning on going to stand arm-in-arm with the Patriot Guards, but they didn't show! It's a shame, because we laid out the welcome mat too!

Members of the extremist Westboro Baptist Church were planning to protest at the funeral of a fallen soldier on Saturday but never showed up. They instead went to Nevada to protest at two other soldier's funerals.
Hundreds of Patriot Guard members came to San Diego on motorcycles to counter-protest had the Westboro group gone through with their actions. The Patriot Guards travel the country to shield grieving family members from the protests of the Westboro group.Molly Weasley makes Chuck Norris eat his vegetables.

Saturday was my mando day, and I was called in, otherwise I was going to head over. Besides the Patriot Guard, there was a Sheriff's Detail there to ensure there was no disruption.
I actually passed about 30 or so bikers heading that direction on my way in to work. I was tempted to honk my horn and wave.

I had to work a detail with one other officer at our Veterens Appreciation Parade a few years ago where we had to provide "crowd control" for one of these nutjobs. The KY ACLU out of Louisville had been sending us letters threatening to sue if we didn't let him carry his signs and spout his hate speech.
He was hard to listen to, but the toughest thing was trying to explain to citizens that we couldn't do anything about him. Eventually, some of the National Guardsmen at the parade carried their unit banner over and stood in front of him so nobody had to look at him at least.(We had him confined to a small area in front of the PD with police line tape "for his protection") He said he was going to move down the street to get away from the banner, and I told him he was free to do that but that I could not guarantee his safety if he did.
He left the parade about 10 minutes later.
Kentucky passed a law last year to prevent these protests at funerals, but much of it was ruled unconstitutional.

Well one way to counter this is to wait and find out when one of their family members die. Then everyone gather at their funeral and do the same to them. Maybe after a few times they might get the idea......then again I guess their to stupid to understand.

We have a military funeral tomorrow. The crazy kool aide drinkers are supposed to protest the funeral. We escorted about 15 Patriot Guards to the funeral home. Hopefully the kool aide sippers won't show.
