ATF, SHERIFF ARREST TWO IN MURDER FOR HIRE PLOT AGAINST LOCAL TENNESSEE INVESTIGATOR

A Tennessee couple has been arrested on federal drug charges associated with a murder for hire plot, James M. Cavanaugh, Special Agent in Charge of the Nashville Division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Craig S. Morford, U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee, and Putnam County Sheriff David Andrews announced last week. ATF special agents and Putnam County Sheriff’s Office detectives arrested William Vincent Dunn, 32, and Misty Jean Langford, 24, both of Baxter, Tennessee, without incident on October 30th.

Dunn and Langford appeared before U.S. District Court Magistrate Judge John S. Bryant for their initial court appearance. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in federal prison, up to a $1,000,000 fine, and a period of supervised release.

According to information contained in a criminal complaint outlining the charge, Dunn and Langford made a down payment of approximately 15 grams of cocaine and $300 in cash to an undercover ATF agent posing as the trigger man to kill a Putnam County Sheriff’s investigator who worked undercover drug cases. In all, the couple agreed to pay the undercover ATF agent a total of $15,000 to commit the murder.

“The successful arrest of Dunn and Langford surely prevented a dedicated
investigator from being attacked,” Cavanaugh said. “This case shows us once again that drug dealers will go to any length to protect themselves and their criminal trade. Fortunately, timely law enforcement teamwork saved one of our own before it was too late.”
