One Broward Sheriff's Office deputy was killed and another wounded after shots were fired during a traffic stop at a Tamarac condominium, according to authorities.
BSO deputy Brian Tephford was working special duty at the Versailles Gardens condominium, said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright.

Tephford was making a routine traffic stop involving two vehicles around 11 p.m. when he placed a call for backup. Deputy Cory Carbocci arrived minutes later.
Some time after Carbocci arrived shots were fired, Coleman-Wright said.
Tephford, who was not wearing a protective vest, was hit twice, while Carbocci, who did have a protective vest, was shot four times, according to police.
The shooting took place in the 8000 block of West Colony Circle.
It is believed the deputies were taken by surprise, and did not have time to draw their weapons, police said.
"It was a routine traffic stop, but what was not routine about this was the violence that ensued," said Sheriff Ken Jenne.
Both officers were rushed to Broward General Medical Center.
Tephford, 34, a six-year veteran of the Broward Sheriff's Office, was pronounced dead at 12:01 a.m., according to Coleman-Wright.
Tephford leaves behind a set of young twins and a four-year-old daughter.
After hearing news of Tephford's death, Sheriff Jenne informed the family personally, Coleman-Wright added.
Carbocci, who has been with the Broward Sheriff's Office for three years, is in stable but guarded condition, and is expected to recover.
Police recovered one of the vehicles believed to be involved in Sunrise. They are currently questioning witnesses who were in the vehicle, Coleman-Wright said.
The other vehicle has not been found, but police are searching for it.
"I don't think there's any agency in Broward County that isn't involved in this manhunt," Jenne said.

Update:
The Associated Press
Authorities on Sunday arrested a man they say fatally shot a sheriff's deputy the night before, and continued to search for two other suspects in the attack, which left another officer wounded.
Broward County sheriff's officials did not immediately provide details about the arrest of Eloyn Ingraham, 28, but allege he killed Deputy Brian Tephford late Saturday after Tephford made a traffic stop in suburban Fort Lauderdale.
"Brian's killer is in custody," Sheriff Ken Jenne said, his voice breaking during a televised news conference. He called the shooting "a heartless, cold-blooded assassination."
It was not immediately clear whether Ingraham had been charged.
Tephford called for backup after he was shot, according to the sheriff's office. Shortly after Deputy Corey Carbocci arrived, both deputies were fired on but neither had a chance to fire their weapons, authorities said.
"It would appear that they were taken totally by surprise by this shooting," Jenne said.
Tephford, 34, a six-year veteran of the department, was shot twice and pronounced dead early Sunday. It was not immediately known if he was wearing a protective vest.
Carbocci, 37, who was wearing a protective vest, was shot four times and was listed in stable but guarded condition at Broward General Medical Center, according to the sheriff's office.
Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said it was unclear what prompted the initial traffic stop and would not disclose any other details.Calm Like A Bomb...

Good. Too bad the citizens of Florida will be paying for this asshole's upkeep for the time it takes to execute him.

I am so sad for his family and those who knew him.http://www.allpoetry.com/Grunts%20Girl
We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

Growing up at the Jersey Shore, Brian Tephford never expressed interest in a career in law enforcement.
So when Tephford moved to Florida in 1991 — without a high school diploma — and eventually became a sheriff's deputy in Broward County, his mother was shocked.
"I couldn't believe it. He was three years as a freshman. I have no idea how he did it,. I was so proud of him," said Carol Aponte, 67, who now lives in Delaware.
Tephford, who attended high school in Wall and Brick, was fatally wounded late Saturday night in the line of duty. The 34-year-old father of three young children was shot while making a traffic stop in suburban Fort Lauderdale.
"He was a normal boy. He played soccer and had a lot of friends," Aponte said Monday.
Eloyn D. Ingraham, 28, of Sunrise, Fla., was being held without bond on charges of first degree murder and attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.
"Brian's killer is in custody," said Sheriff Ken Jenne, his voice breaking during a televised news conference.
He called the shooting "a heartless, cold-blooded assassination."
Two other men, seen on surveillance video with Ingraham, also were arrested. Bernard Forbes, 22, and Andre Delancy, 19, were charged with accessory after the fact. They were being held on $7,500 bond.
Ingraham was a passenger in a car pulled over at a condominium late Saturday after Deputy Brian Tephford suspected the vehicle was stolen because it had the wrong tag, Sheriff Ken Jenne said.
Tephford called for backup minutes after making the stop and Deputy Corey Carbocci was dispatched to the scene. Shortly after, both deputies were fired upon but neither had a chance to fire his weapon, Jenne said.
"It would appear that they were taken totally by surprise by this shooting," he said.
Tephford, 34, who was not wearing a protective vest, was shot twice, Jenne said. The six-year veteran of the department was pronounced dead at a hospital early Sunday.
Carbocci, 37, who was wearing a protective vest, was shot four times, authorities said. He was hospitalized and was expected to make a full recovery.
Tephford grew up in Wall, Berkeley and Brick.
"He was a very good kid, very likable," said Tephford's aunt, Marjorie Cottrell, 76, of Freehold. "He was just up here not too long ago for a visit."
Tephford decided to move to Florida around 1991. He started off working as a car detailer, then eventually was hired by the Sheriff's Department.
Tephford had a 4-year-old daughter and 1-year-old twins — a boy and girl, Aponte said. He married in 1997 and divorced in May.
Aponte said it didn't take becoming a sheriff's deputy to feel proud of her only child.
"I was very proud of him, even when he wasn't doing anything," Aponte said.
