Kern County Sheriff's Deputy William 'Joe' Hudnall, 43, was killed Tuesday in an accident in the Kern Canyon.
The deputy was pulled out of the canyon early Tuesday evening. He was the last of three victims rushed to the Kern Medical Center, after investigators said a black BMW hit the deputy's car at around 5:45 p.m. The two other victims suffered non-life threatening injuries.
The Sheriff's Department said Hudnall was pronounced dead at the hospital. Several agencies were at the scene to try and help the victims and to figure out what caused the crash. Investigators said the deputy was transporting a female prisoner from Kernville to the downtown jail in Bakersfield when the collision happened.
Now deputies are dealing with the death of one of their own. The CHP is asking for any information about a black BMW traveling east from Bakersfield. Officers are asking for anyone who knew about a black BMW traveling east from Bakersfield at around 5:30 p.m. Monday to call and talk to investigators at 864-4400.
The sheriff's department said Hudnall has been a deputy with the department for nine years and was assigned to the Kern Valley Substation. Sheriff's officials said Hudnall leaves behind his wife, three sons and a daughter.
