    Nov 21, 2006 07:23 PM PST

HONOLULU (KHNL) - One officer is listed in critical condition after an accident Tuesday morning on Hickam Air Force Base involving three HPD motorcycle officers. The solo bike officers were escorting President Bush's motorcade back to Hickam when the accident occured just after 7:30 AM.

    A bit of an update:

HONOLULU (AP) _ Four Honolulu police officers were injured when they crashed their motorcycles while escorting President Bush's motorcade during his stop on Oahu.

This morning, three were seen lying on the grass at the Hickam Air Force Base near their overturned motorcycles as the motorcade passed by taking Bush to a breakfast with Hawaii troops.

One solo bike officer hit a slippery spot near a curve in the road before crashing. Police say two other officers lost control of their bikes while trying to avoid the accident.

One officer had internal bleeding and remained at The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition. The two other officers were treated and released.

Police did not release their names.

In another incident, a fourth solo bike officer crashed and injured his wrist when attempting a U-turn on loose gravel last night. He was also treated and released.

UPDATE: Officer Steve Favela Dies of Injuries

Officer in Bush Motorcade Accident Dies

    Nov 26 7:31 PM US/Eastern

A motorcycle officer injured last week while escorting President Bush in the islands died Sunday, police said.

Steve Favela, 30, and two other officers crashed their cycles as the presidential motorcade was traveling across Hickam Air Force Base to meet troops for breakfast early Tuesday. The other officers were treated at The Queen's Medical Center and released.

Favela, an eight-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department and father of four, had suffered internal injuries and had been listed in critical condition at the medical center.

Light rain had been falling on the partly cloudy morning, and some roads on the base were slick.

Members of the White House medical team _ including an ambulance _ were cut loose from the motorcade to help. Local ambulance and fire units also responded.

Police Officers put themselves at risk for strangers every day. Some do not make it home to their families. Next time you think of saying something negative about the police, remember...YOU are one of the strangers.
