ABINGDON, Md. — The 28-year-old Harford County deputy who died when his police cruiser ran off the road this week suffered a fatal heart attack just before the accident, the state medical examiner reported today.
Deputy First Class William Beebe is the first Harford County sheriff’s deputy to die in the line of duty since 1899.
Released to authorities and family members, the report concluded Beebe had 90 percent blockage in the aorta leading to his heart.
“The family, fiance and the men and women of the Sheriff’s Office are gratified with the thorough autopsy performed by the Office of the State Medical Examiner,” Sheriff R. Thomas Golding said in a statement. “Knowing the cause of death and the relationship of the heart attack to the accident helps bring closure to a very difficult and trying situation.”
Beebe was traveling near Abingdon on Monday en route to a report of an attempted suicide when he had the heart attack and crashed his cruiser into a shallow creek bed just before midnight. He was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center.
A county sheriff’s department crash reconstruction specialist said the medical emergency was the only factor which resulted in the crash.
A memorial service is planned Friday at the St. Ignatius Church in Hickory at 11 a.m. After the service, a funeral procession with police and fire presence is planned to Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium, Md.Calm Like A Bomb...
