Louisiana Officers shot
THIBODAUX, La. -- Two deputies who stopped a stolen pickup truck in Lafourche Parish were shot and wounded by the driver's accomplice, who drove by in a second stolen pickup, authorities said.
Deputies Bridget Rupe, 23, and Roland Guillot, 41.
Two suspects, both from Georgia, were caught within hours of the Tuesday morning shooting. Both were to be booked with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer, said Larry Weidel, spokesman for Sheriff Craig Webre.
Neither deputy's injuries were considered life-threatening but both required hospitalization and one, Bridget Rupe, 23, underwent surgery for serious wounds to her left arm, Weidel said. Rupe had only been out of a law enforcement training academy for about a month, Weidel said.
The shooting happened around 6:30 a.m. after Rupe and Deputy Roland Guillot, 41, spotted a blue Chevrolet pickup truck reported stolen minutes earlier from a Thibodaux convenience store. Guillot had pulled the car over and was handcuffing the suspect when a second pickup truck, a white Chevrolet pickup reported stolen a day earlier in Georgia, drove by. The driver of that truck fired a shotgun, wounding Guillot in the back.
The shooter fired several more times, Weidel said, striking Rupe in the left arm.
"Both officers return fire and take cover. The person they were trying to arrest leaves and jumps in the vehicle," Weidel said.
A helicopter, all terrain-vehicles, mounted officers and police dog units from several agencies converged on the area after the officers' called for help. They found where the white pickup had turned off into some woods, Weidel said.
The suspects had abandoned the truck and were caught around 10 a.m., Weidel said.
The driver of the pickup stolen in Thibodaux was identified as Daniel Stuart Rhodes, 22, of Harlem, Ga. The driver of the other pickup, and the alleged triggerman, was identified as Robert Alan Power, 18, of Martinez, Ga.
Both were being held at the sheriff's Criminal Operations Center in Lockport.
Weidel said Rhodes had been wearing body armor at the time of the shooting. Both vehicles were to be examined by the state police crime lab and both men were being interrogated Tuesday.
The shootings of the Lafourche deputies were the latest in a string of shootings involving south Louisiana law enforcement officers.
Monday evening, a New Orleans police officer was shot in the elbow and ankle after he and other officers chased a suspect, trapping him in the yard of a vacant house, police spokesman Sgt. Carlton Lewis said. The suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire.
In Washington Parish on Monday, a sheriff's deputy and her husband were killed when gunfire broke out at a Franklinton motel. A male deputy was critically wounded.
According to Washington Parish Sheriff Aubrey Jones, both deputies were transport officers and the male deputy had come to the motel to get the female deputy's vehicle after his had broken down. What started the gunfire is unclear and the names of those is not avalible.
That makes 5 officers within 24 hours in south Louisiana. All of these officers are within about 100 miles of each other.

It really seems like the number of officers being shot is up nationwide this year.
I wonder if the FBI numbers for the year will show that LOD assaults were actually up this year, or they just seem to be because so many have happened recently.

As the wife of a LA LEO, I am enjoying the sounds of him sleeping safely in our bed right now and pray that God protects him and his fellow officers always.
My heartful sympathy goes out to the families, friends, and loved ones for their losses.
