Shelby County Deputy Stabbed
Off-duty deputy stabbed while breaking up a fight
Jan 6, 2006, 10:05 PM CST
Deputy Patrick Talley was done with his shift as a court bailiff, he'd picked up his 5-year-old son and the two of them went to Sonic to grab a bite to eat. It was a seemingly innocent string of events that landed Talley in the hospital.
Dozens of officers swarmed the scene where one of their own almost lost his life.
"He said 'I'm a police officer! Y'all stop! Y'all stop!,'" said eyewitness Kenneth King.
King was there when Shelby County Sheriff's Deputy Patrick Talley got between two women allegedly fighting over a man. He says the driver of a blue car confronted a Sonic employee.
"So I guess she seen who it was," said King. "She said 'don't come up here on my job with that mess'...the other girl came out with a knife and she reached over the police officer trying to stick her."
King says when Deputy Talley turned to stop the woman, he was stabbed.
"The police said 'oh, she done stuck me' and that's when he pulled the gun out and said 'drop the knife, drop the knife,'" he said.
"He said 'get down on your knees,'" King said. "She got down on her knees blood coming out of his chest."
Deputy Talley was rushed to the Med with a full police escort.
"She's sweet that's all I can say, she's sweet," said Yvonnia Becton, the mother of the 21-year-old woman accused of stabbing Deputy Talley.
"She didn't mean to, whatever went on, she didn't mean it," said Becton.
Now her daughter faces aggravated assault charges, and Deputy Talley faces a long recovery, the price he pays for being off the job, but still doing the job he is sworn to do.
"Our officers are officers 24 hours, 7 days a week, regardless of whether they're in uniform or not," said Shelby County Sheriff Mark Luttrell.
Luttrell says he spoke with Deputy Talley, the 18-year veteran told the sheriff, he was sore, but grateful to be alive. Talley's little boy is okay and with family tonight.
I was the senond car on scene of this call, it intially went out as numerous 911 hangs, then the dispatcher got on the radio and said that we had an off-duty officer down
Of course we had like 20 cars there in a couple of minutes, the Deputy had taken the suspect into custody and we escorted the ambulance to the Med. He will be alright.

It is better to be tried by 12, than carried by 6.
