Sergeant Sheppard succumbed to injuries sustained when he was struck by a vehicle several hours earlier. He was struck by the vehicle while directing traffic at the scene of a fire at an industrial park.

He was flown to the Medical College of Georgia where he succumbed to severe head injuries shortly after midnight.

Sergeant Sheppard had served with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office for 2 years. He is survived by his wife.

RIP brother. Its one thing to feel for a fallen officer you dont know but another to have been there when one of us goes down. Jason, your in my prayers and you wont be forgotten. Its never easy to see one of us go...even harder to swallow when hes from your homestate.

I watched as all the police officers passed - over 250 before I lost count - flashing lights in contrast to the absolute silence - no sirens, no speed, nothing but officers in uniform behind the wheels of their vehicles - a processional that was miles long.

I do not know the tradition in other states but in SC the tradition is that if a funeral processional is passing in the other direction, you stop your car from the start of the procession to the end of it in homage to the person that died. It always made sense to me. When someone close to you dies, your whole world stops and it seems almost disrespectful that everyone else should be moving on.

I am a proud South Carolinian and will tell all here that where I was, not a soul moved. I saw people praying, there were salutes to the hearse as it drove by with it's motorcycle escort, but along the straight-away of Pine Log road, not a car moved as the processional of lights drove in the opposite direction.

Jason was the first officer I trained. He always had a great attitude towards his work and the comunity he served. Even when he was not feeling well, or like being at work, he would smile.."grin and bear it".
I was also on scene a little way down the road when the incident occurred, a sight I will never forget.
He was a good man, a good officer, and a very talented singer (Could have been a profesional).
He will be missed but always be remebered.
