Two Men in Custody in Brooklyn Police Shooting

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A New York City Police officer is in serious condition after being wounded in what may have been a shootout in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

It happened at around 4:10 this morning at Prospect Place and Sixth Avenue near Prospect Park. Hours later, police stormed a brownstone on St. Mark's Avenue and took two suspects into custody.

A police spokesman says the officer was shot once in either the shoulder or the side of the chest. He was conscious when rushed to Methodist Hospital.

Police cordoned off an SUV a few blocks from the scene. It's believed the white Acura MDX was used as the getaway car.

The shooting came less than six weeks after an off-duty officer, John Lopez, was shot by a man who tried to hijack Lopez' car to make a getaway from a bank robbery in Queens, according to police.

Lopez, hit once in the thigh as he chased the shooter and an accomplice, returned fire and seriously wounded his attacker, police said. Lopez returned home from a hospital the next day.

In October, an off-duty police sergeant was shot while trying to save a man who was begging for his life, police said.

Sgt. James Rector confronted and exchanged gunfire with a teenager who was holding a gun to another man's head in the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, according to police. Rector, 34, was wounded in the leg and buttocks, and Eric Hines, 17, was killed.

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An undercover New York City Police officer is in serious condition after being wounded in a shootout in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

As many as 10 shots were exchanged at around 4:10 this morning at Prospect Place and Sixth Avenue near Prospect Park. The wounded cop was among four officers in an unmarked police vehicle. At least two suspects were in another vehicle. Hours later, police stormed a brownstone at 33 St. Mark's Avenue and took two suspects into custody.

Neighbors describe the building as a known crack den.

The officer was shot in the back near the shoulder and his bullet-proof vest may have saved his life. He was in surgery and was expected to survive.

Police cordoned off an SUV a few blocks from the shooting scene. It's believed the white Acura MDX was used as the getaway car. A woman who was behind the wheel was questioned, but her involvement is unclear.

    And the plot thickens

Words, then Shots Exchanged in Brooklyn Police Shooting

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A police officer was wounded early Saturday after he and three fellow plainclothes officers had a brief exchange with two people in another car they believed was following them, authorities said.

The police were questioning two suspects, including the husband of another police officer, after the shootout, which occurred around 4:10 a.m. at Prospect Place and Sixth Avenue in Brooklyn.

According to an account provided by Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly in a news conference Saturday morning, the police officers were on a routine patrol. They pulled over their unmarked car upon noticing the second vehicle, an Acura.
The driver of the Acura pulled alongside the officers' car, leaned over and said ``You got a beef?'' before firing a shot, officials said.

The bullet went underneath Officer Andrew Suarez's bulletproof vest, traveled up his back and lodged in his neck. He was taken to Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn and is expected to make a full recovery.

The police officers fired about 13 rounds at the Acura, which sped away, Kelly said. It was later found being driven by a female police officer who apparently owned the car.

Her husband and a second person were being questioned but no one had been charged Saturday morning. Authorities did not identify the suspects or the female officer, who they said had been with the force for 13 years.

Police said they have yet to recover the weapon believed to have fired the shot at Suarez.

Suarez has been with the NYPD for about four years and is assigned to the 78th precinct.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg met with Suarez at the hospital and said he was in good spirits.

``We joked and we laughed,'' Bloomberg said at the news conference. ``We're just lucky this wasn't an awful lot worse.''
The shooting came less than six weeks after an off-duty officer, John Lopez, was shot by a man who tried to hijack Lopez' car to make a getaway from a bank robbery in Queens, according to police.
