Sgt. Robert Winget Down (California)
Ripon police Sgt. Robert Winget died Tuesday after he was thrown off an all-terrain vehicle while on a routine patrol near the Stanislaus River in Ripon, officials said.
Winget, a 57-year-old married father of four, spent 37 years in law enforcement and was a veteran of the Marines.
Winget began his routine patrol Tuesday morning in a wooded area along the Stanislaus River. At 11:40 a.m., dispatchers got an "undecipherable" radio transmission from the officer, Sgt. Edward Ormonde said.
Officials from the Ripon Police Department and the surrounding area began a massive search for Winget in the area of his patrol. A command center was established near the intersection of South Stockton Street and Doak Boulevard.
Wignet was found by searchers at 1:14 p.m. and rushed to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
An investigation is under way to determine what happened but foul play is not suspected.
"It's still under investigation, but we have no indicators that anybody harmed him," Ormonde said.
The flag was lowered to half staff at the Ripon Police Department late Tuesday night.
