Officer Wayne Pitt Down (Washington D.C.)
District police said an officer involved in a crash on Friday died after being taken off life support Wednesday morning.
Police said Officer Wayne Pitt -- a four-year veteran of the force -- was working a traffic detail at the corner of Mount Pleasant and Lamont streets at about 9 p.m. Friday for an Easter procession when he got out of his patrol car to stop a motorized scooter from crossing the street.
The car was still in gear. Pitt tried to get back in when it struck the scooter, a Metro bus and then a tree.
The 57-year-old officer worked in the Raleigh-Durham Police Department for 20 years before joining the District police force.
