UTICA OFFICER'S SHOOTING DEATH: Reward offered
April 13, 2007
UTICA – There are no suspects in custody at this time in connection to the shooting death of Utica police Officer Thomas Lindsey, Police Chief C. Allen Pylman said at a press conference this morning at City Hall.
Lindsey, 32, was shot and killed around 9:20 p.m. Thursday after making a routine traffic stop on the 1100 block of Neilson Street in Cornhill. He called for back-up shortly before he died.
The car that Lindsey pulled over Thursday night was found minutes later on John Street and taken into custody, Taurisano said.
He said it was sent to the state police forensic lab in Albany.
Two people who were taken away in handcuffs Thursday night from the John Street scene.
They were questioned and later released, Pylman said.
Pylman said the FBI is putting up a $25,000 reward for anyone who can give information that will lead to the apprehension of the killer.
Lindsey, who joined the department in October 2001, was a member of the department's Tactical Unit. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran who served at one time as an Embassy Guard both in South Korea and Australia.
Pylman said Lindsey was recognized for his exemplary service on numerous occasions, including three such recognitions from 2005.
"There are suspects," Utica Public Safety Commissioner Philip Taurisano said overnight at the shooting scene. "We're just narrowing down who was in the area."
Thursday night and early today, scores of heavily armed officers searched the area of Neilson and Mortimer streets. Shortly before midnight, 10-member SWAT teams were seen breaking down the door of a home on the 1100 block of Neilson Street.
A bus brought to the scene was used as an area for officers and investigators to get warm in the pre-dawn hours.
As daylight approached, visible police activity remained centered on the Neilson Street crime scene. At 3:45 a.m., a flatbed pulled up to the scene and took away Lindsey's patrol vehicle. At 4:20 a.m., police broke down the floodlights they'd used to examine the street closely for clues.
Around 11 a.m., the scene had quieted down and many vehicles were gone.
Mayor Tim Julian, who was on vacation in South Carolina, began driving back to Utica around 8 a.m. today, City Hall spokesman Lou Parotta said.
Lindsey is the second Mohawk Valley police officer killed in the line of duty since the start of 2006. New Hartford police Officer Joseph Corr was shot and killed by a jewelry store robbery suspect in Kirkland on Feb. 27, 2006.

RIP, brother.
And Shepards we shall be,
for thee, My Lord, for thee,
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy Command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls will it ever be.
