Policeman dies after bridge crash
An off-duty policeman has died after being struck by a car on a road bridge in Tyneside.
Det Con Peter Hinde was left in a critical condition after being hit on the Redheugh Bridge in the early hours of Saturday.
The 33-year-old, from Gateshead, died from his injuries in Newcastle General Hospital on Sunday afternoon.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said Mr Hinde had worked for Sunderland CID and was about to be promoted to sergeant.
The circumstances surrounding the accident are still being investigated and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
Mr Hinde's commanding officer, Ch Supt Dave Pryer described him as a dedicated and valued officer.
He said: "I have known Peter for a number of years and he was an outstanding officer, totally dedicated to serving the public.
"He was a valued member of the team in Sunderland. The sympathies of everyone in Northumbria Police go out to his family."
Any witnesses to the collision, which happened at 0050 BST, are asked to contact police.
