Florida Trooper In Critical Condition After Crash
Florida State Police Trooper Darryl Haywood Jr. was hospitalized after a vehicle struck his patrol car Sunday on the Florida Turnpike in Broward County.
The crash occurred early Sunday morning when Haywood had pulled over his patrol car on a traffic stop. Another vehicle lost control, hitting Haywood's cruiser and forcing it onto the car that was pulled over.
Haywood was transported to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, suffering from life-threatening injuries.
In Oct. 2004, Haywood's father, Darryl Haywood Sr., who was also a trooper, was killed when his patrol car crashed into a tree.
He was trying to stop Donald Williams on Interstate 4 near Daytona Beach. Investigators said Williams was speeding on a motorcycle when the accident happened.
Williams was later charged and convicted with causing that accident and sentenced to more than 30 years in prison.
A number of Florida Highway Patrol officers from Central Florida have traveled south to be with the Haywood family.
