Police Officer Russel Timoshenko (NYPD)
Officer Dies From Wounds Sustained During Brooklyn Shooting
July 14, 2007
Officer Russel Timoshenko, the young police officer shot Monday during a traffic shot in Brooklyn, has died.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said Saturday evening that Timoshenko passed at the Kings County Hospital surrounded by family and members of the 71st Precinct.
"He made the ultimate sacrifice with unflinching sacrifice to do it; we are more committed than ever to the prosecution of the individuals responsible for his death,” said Kelly.
Kelly said Timoshenko passed away on his own; he had been paralyzed, suffered brain swelling, and was unable to breathe on his own since the shooting.
Upon hearing the news of Timoshenko's death, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has been out of town all week, will return to the city.
"While I can't know the anguish they are going through, I want Russel's parents, Leonid and Tatyana, to know their son was a hero," said Bloomberg in a statement. "It does not provide any consolation, but I am proud of the investigators who worked so swiftly to apprehend those that committed this detestable and cowardly act. Despite the best efforts of the team of medical professionals at Kings County Medical Center, Russel has now left this world and is in the hands of God. May he rest in peace."
Timoshenko, 23, and his partner Herman Yan pulled over a BMW SUV early Monday morning under the suspicion that it was stolen. Prosecutors say Dexter Bostic, 34, shot Timoshenko in the face while Robert Ellis, 34, shot Yan in the chest and the arm.
Yan, who was saved by his police vest, was released earlier this week from the hospital.
Prosecutors believe a third suspect, 29-year-old Lee Woods, was driving the SUV at the time of the shooting.
Three guns were found at the scene. Police say the one allegedly used by Bostic had also been used in a recent drive-by shooting in Queens.
Ellis and Bostic were arraigned on several charges including attempted murder, assault on a police officer, and weapons possession Friday. Neither suspect entered a plea; however, Ellis' attorney claimed that his client did not fire any shots. His attorney also said that Ellis was the driver and Bostic was in the passenger seat.
Both were extradited Thursday from Pennsylvania, where they had been captured after a four-day manhunt that stretched from Brooklyn to the Poconos.
Woods was charged Wednesday.
Kelly said the prosecution is already filing paperwork to increase the charges in response to Timoshenko's death.
All three suspects were ordered to be held without bail.

New York City Police Department
New York

Biographical Info
Age: 23
Tour of Duty: 1 year, 6 months
Badge Number: Not available
Incident Details
Cause of Death: Gunfire
Date of Incident: Monday, July 9, 2007
Weapon Used: Handgun; .45 caliber
Suspect Info: Three apprehended
Officer Russel Timoshenko succumbed to gunshot wounds inflicted five days earlier when he and his partner made a traffic stop.
The two officers were on patrol when they spotted a suspicious vehicle. A check of DMV records revealed that the license plate on the vehicle belonged to another vehicle. The officers conducted a traffic stop at the corner of Lefferts and Rogers Avenues, in Brooklyn. Unknown to the officers, the vehicle they had stopped was stolen.
Officer Timoshenko approached the vehicle from the passenger side as his partner approached from the driver's side. As they drew near the car, one suspect opened fire with a .45 caliber handgun, striking Officer Timoshenko twice in the face. Another suspect opened fire on his partner with a 9mm handgun, striking him in the arm and chest. That officer was saved by his bullet resistant vest. Despite his wounds, he was able to return fire and radio his location and a description of the vehicle to fellow officers.
Members of the Brooklyn South Homicide squad, who were in the area investigating an unrelated case, arrived on the scene within seconds and rushed Officer Timoshenko to Kings County Hospital.
The suspects fled, but ditched their vehicle about five blocks from the shooting scene, leaving behind their .45 caliber handgun, 9mm handgun, and a loaded 9mm TEC-9. Investigators were able to lift a fingerprint from a box of chicken left in the vehicle, which led to the arrest of the driver the following day.
Two days later, detectives from the New York City Police Department, along with members of the Pennsylvania State Police, United States Marshals Service, and several other agencies, arrested both suspects on I-80 in Monroe County, Pennsylvania.
All three suspects where charged with aggravated murder and other charges related to the murder of Officer Timoshenko and the wounding of his partner.
Officer Timoshenko had served with the New York City Police Department for 1.5 years and was assigned to the 71st Precinct. He is survived by his parents.

that is so awful
prayers alwayshttp://www.allpoetry.com/Grunts%20Girl
We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

My prayers go out for his family and the NYPD. It's heartbreaking everytime I hear about another good life snuffed-out by human waste.
For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.

500 fights, that's the number I figured when I was a kid. 500 street fights and you could consider yourself a legitimate tough guy. You need them for experience. To develop leather skin. So I got started. Of course along the way you stop thinking about being tough and all that. It stops being the point. You get past the silliness of it all. But then, after, you realize that's what you are.
