Pittsburgh Officer Injured In Shootout
A Pittsburgh police officer was shot Wednesday night near the intersection of Kelly and Hale streets in Homewood, Chief Robert McNeilly said.
Sgt. Craig Campbell was hit in the hand during a shootout with the suspect, 33-year-old Steven Hamlin, at about 9 p.m., McNeilly said.
Campbell was part of a Street Response Unit that had been patrolling the Homewood area for the past three weeks, McNeilly said.
The shooting started after Hamlin was pulled over in a car that was believed to be stolen, investigators said. Hamlin allegedly jumped out and began to run, when he tripped and fell, police said.
As Campbell tried to subdue Hamlin, police said Hamlin turned and fired at least one shot. Campbell and Officer Eric Harpster returned fire, striking Hamlin several times, McNeilly said.
Hamlin was reportedly in critical condition Thursday morning, but is expected to survive, McNeilly said.
Campbell was released from a hospital on Thursday.
