A Captain at my last department had a motorcycle accident off-duty last week. He may be paralyzed. He is still in intensive care. His wife was on the back of the bike, and she is okay, except for a broken finger. Please keep them in your prayers.

The 12:30 update now says that the officer was injured. I believe that is correct, because I hear he is in surgery.

Here's some video from the 3pm news conference, as posted on the Town's web site.. He's got a bunch of broken bones, including facial bones, and what's being described now as head trauma, which can mean anything.

According to one news report, he was chasing a speeder with lights and sirens when a car pulled out in front of him. He smashed the back door of the car halfway into the vehicle. The speeder kept going.

His motorcycle was all torn up - They showed it on TV, but I don't see any photos on the web yet. It's a wonder he's still alive.

At 10:04 a.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2007, a motorist reported a vehicle crash involving a Flower Mound Police Motor Officer and a motor vehicle at the intersection of Cross Timbers Road and Timber Valley.

The police officer, Kevin Schmidt, is currently in stable condition at John Peter Smith Hospital. Officer Schmidt has been with the Flower Mound Police Department for nine years, five of those as a motor officer. The driver of the other vehicle, a 1999 Toyota Camry LE, was not injured.

The accident is still under investigation by the Texas Department of Public Safety with the assistance of the Lewisville Police Department.

Officer Schmidt is a decorated FMPD officer and a 2002 recipient of the Officer of the Year Award. We appreciate the public concern for Officer Schmidt and his family and the Town asks that you continue to keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers. The Police Department will provide all updated information as is becomes available.

Flower Mound officer thrown from bike, in stable condition

Onlooker: 'There's no way he could live'

06:05 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 25, 2007
By BRANDON FORMBY and JAY PARSONS / The Dallas Morning News
    bformby@dallasnews.com | jparsons@dallasnews.com

FLOWER MOUND — A Flower Mound police officer was injured Wednesday morning after being thrown more than 70 feet when his motorcycle struck another vehicle during a pursuit.

Officer Kevin Schmidt, who was named officer of the year in 2002, was pursuing a motorist in the eastbound lanes of the 800 block of Cross Timbers Road at 10:04 a.m. Wednesday. Police said Officer Schmidt was wearing a helmet and using his sirens and emergency lights at the time.

As the officer came upon the road’s intersection with Timber Valley Drive, a driver in a Toyota Camry turned left from the westbound lanes and crossed in front of the officer. Officer Schmidt’s motorcycle struck the passenger side of the Camry.

Witnesses said the officer’s body landed at least 70 feet from the crash site.

“It was scary,” said Flower Mound resident Shari Odom, who came upon the scene just as rescuers arrived. “He was just laying there on his stomach, [looking] lifeless, and I thought, ‘Oh, my God, there’s no way he could live.’.”

The man in the Camry, whose name was not released Wednesday, was not injured. Police said the motorist that Officer Schmidt was pursuing did not stop.

Officer Schmidt was flown by CareFlite to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth in serious condition Wednesday morning. His condition was upgraded to stable Wednesday afternoon.

Police said it was unclear whether the officer’s injuries were considered life-threatening. Details of his injuries were not released due to confidentiality reasons. Family members and fellow officers flocked to be near him.

“There’s a great amount of support at the hospital,” said Lt. Wendell Mitchell, a Flower Mound police spokesman.

Lt. Mitchell described the 35-year-old husband and father of two as a family man who was well-liked and always pitched in to help co-workers. Officer Schmidt, a nine-year veteran of the department, has two brothers who also work in law enforcement.

“He’s just a really good guy,” Lt. Mitchell said.

Lt. Mitchell said Flower Mound has never lost an officer in the line of duty and that Officer Schmidt’s injuries were the worst he’d seen a Flower Mound officer sustain in more than a decade.

While law enforcement officials understand their job is inherently dangerous, Lt. Mitchell said, the accident distressed department employees.

“The officers are, of course, upset, as anyone would be in this situation,” he said.

Earlier this month, Plano Police Officer Dayle “Wes” Hardy died after he ran a red light and his motorcycle struck a vehicle that turned left in front of him. Officer Hardy also had his sirens and emergency lights flashing at the time as he presumablyÖ tried to catch up with a traffic violator.

Lewisville police and the Department of Public Safety closed Cross Timbers, also known as FM1171, in both directions for four hours on Wednesday as they investigated the accident on Flower Mound’s eastern edge. Officer Schmidt’s damaged motorcycle lay in a pile of glass and debris, his emergency lights still flashing as investigators worked.

“This intersection is really bad,” said Flower Mound resident Ricky Pino, who stopped at a nearby shopping center after the crash. “It doesn’t surprise me this happened on this turn here. Coming out of here, people speed across Cross Timbers every day.”

Lt. Mitchell said he didn’t have accident statistics, but that the intersection was no more dangerous than any other along Cross Timbers Road. He also said the accident investigation was in its preliminary stages and more information may not be available for several days. No charges have been filed.

Officer Schmidt is one of two motorcycle officers in the Denton County town.

Clif Burdette, coordinator of the Motorcycle Safety Unit for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said many police departments in Texas use motorcycles for traffic patrol, but the DPS stopped the practice in the 1970s. Most police departments that use motorcycle patrols provide extra training, he said.

There are a number of benefits to using motorcycles as opposed to cars for police work, including the ability of a motorcycle to maneuver easier in traffic and respond quicker to an emergency, he said.

Other benefits include increased flexibility with radar guns and cost.

“You can buy two motorcycles for the cost of one police car,” he said.

Officer Schmidt has been a motorcycle officer for five years.

The nonprofit Heroes of Denton County will provide financial assistance for immediate needs of his family.

A fund for the officer’s family was also set up at the Denton Area Teachers Credit Union. Anyone who wishes to contribute can make a donation at any location to the Kevin Schmidt fund.

Staff Writer Marice Richter contributed to this report.

My prayers are with him for a speedy recovery.

What amazes me is how people ignore lights and sirens these days. I see it all the time, doesn't matter if it is an ambulance, fire, or police, people driving with their heads up their posterior ignore emergency vehicles.
