Phoenix Officer Down
PHOENIX – A Phoenix police officer shot while investigating a forgery in progress at a check-cashing store died late Friday night at a hospital, authorities said.
Officer George Cortez, 23, was a two-year veteran of the department, police said.
Police Chief Jack Harris said Cortez was attempting to apprehend a suspect at the check-cashing business in west Phoenix when he was shot.
The male suspect fled the scene in a vehicle and remains at large, police said.
Cortez, who was married with two young children, was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center and was later pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Police Officers put themselves at risk for strangers every day. Some do not make it home to their families. Next time you think of saying something negative about the police, remember...YOU are one of the strangers.

At a forgery in progress. Think about that. How many of us would have been mentally prepared to get into a life/death situation in response to that kind of call. Keep your eyes open and always have "the plan". Stay safe.
Rest in peace. And Shepards we shall be,
for thee, My Lord, for thee,
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,
That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy Command.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls will it ever be.
