CHP Officer Dies After Being Hit By Fleeing Vehicle
Suspect Taken Into Custody In Shingle Springs

SHINGLE SPRINGS, Calif. -- A California Highway Patrol officer died Tuesday afternoon after he was hit by a fleeing vehicle earlier in the day, the CHP said.
Doug Scott Russell, 46, was a 22-year veteran of the CHP.
Authorities have named David Zanon as the suspected driver of the vehicle. He is listed in fair condition at Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Officers said Zanon was a known drug offender, and may have been living out of his car.
Meanwhile, eastbound Highway 50 is being diverted off the freeway near Shingle Springs as officials conduct an investigation. Westbound Highway 50 is open.
Officials said the incident began at about 12:30 p.m. when a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy approached a vehicle at 9975 Florin Road and attempted to roust a person sleeping inside.
The person in the car started it and took off, leading police on a chase eastbound on Highway 50, said Jasper Begay, spokesman for the CHP.
Along the way, a CHP officer attempted to deploy a tack strip in an attempt to flatten the tires of the fleeing vehicle.
Police said the vehicle swerved toward the officer. The officer responded by firing at the vehicle. The officer was then then struck.
The chase ended at the Missouri Flat Road exit of Highway 50 in Shingle Springs. The person driving the fleeing car was taken into custody.
The officer, who was not immediately identified, was taken to University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.
Authorities said a man driving a white sport utility vehicle may have witnessed the incident. The driver is urged to call the CHP at 916-861-1300 with any information.
