Officer in Canada Down
Two people are in custody after a 22-year veteran of the York Regional Police force was killed early Thursday on a residential street in Markham, north of Toronto, police Chief Armand Labarge said in a statement.
Const. Robert Plunkett, 43, was a member of the Special Services Unit, police said.
Police have confirmed that two people have been arrested, but have not said what charges they may face.
Media reports say the officer, who was not in uniform, had a house under surveillance in the area where he was killed. A vehicle was involved, but how the officer was killed is not yet clear.
York police are reportedly investigating the death as a homicide. The traffic accident reconstruction unit is on the scene, which is surrounded with police tape and marked with numerous traffic cones.
The incident, just before 6 a.m. ET, happened on Ascot Crescent near Birchmount Road and Steeles Avenue East.
This is the first death of an on-duty York Region officer since 1984.

Ditto. We've had 7 officers killed here in Aguascalientes since Dec. 06. I wish I could say I was numb.
