Dang - I know Bastrop well. It's just a little north of where my parents live.
Rest in peace, and thank you for trying to stop those animals.

God Bless them.
For the morning will come. Brightly will it shine on the brave and true, kindly upon all who suffer for the cause, glorious upon the tombs of heroes. Thus will shine the dawn.

Rest easy brothers
Wise men stand behind me, brave men stand beside me, but only fools stand against me.
The force that propels you to prevail when you are put to a test of survival will be a mindset that refuses to accept nothing but winning.
Too often, we lose sight of life's simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown, BUT, it only takes 4 muscles to reach out and bitch slap that motherf*cker upside the head.

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion

Tragedy strikes: Two officers killed
By Mark Rainwater

Two detectives with the Bastrop Police Department were killed in a shoot-out that left one suspect dead with police agencies across the country helping in the search for another suspect.
Bastrop Police Chief Alan Freeman said Friday was "the saddest day of my entire life."
Dead in the shooting are Detective Sgt. John Smith, 40, and Charles "Chuck" Wilson, 34, who died following an exchange of gunfire at the Budget Inn, 206 S. Franklin.
Since the shooting involved officers with Bastrop Police, Freeman said detectives from Louisiana State Police are handling the investigation. Troop F public information officer Mark Dennis said details of why Smith and Wilson went to the hotel are still sketchy.
Freeman said one of the two received a call shortly after noon about two people staying in the hotel, later determined to be Tanya "Little Feather" Smith and the suspect who was shot just outside the door of Room 111 at the hotel.
"They worked a lot of cases together," Freeman said of Smith and Wilson. "If one of them was in a situation where he needed back up, he'd call the other."
Wilson was able to get away from the hotel, coming down a sidewalk on South Franklin when Daroth To saw him collapse. To, who owns Handy Stop No. 1 in Bastrop, was pulling up at City Hall when he "heard 20 to 50 rounds." To got out of his vehicle and raced to wounded officer.
"I tried to call an ambulance, but couldn't get through because so many people were calling," To said.
To performed CPR on Wilson, training he received as a hazardous materials handler in Arizona.
Later Friday afternoon, To said he "knew Chuck real well. He was a good guy."
Dennis said he was uncertain when the two MedLife paramedics arrived at the scene. David Thomas, operations manager for MedLife, and Jade Tankley were both shot as they attempted to help remove Smith from the scene. Parker underwent surgery at Morehouse General. Tankley was treated and released but was later admitted to Ashley County Medical Center in Crossett, Ark., according to MedLife owner Ted Parker.
As the afternoon unfolded, what was likely well over 100 police officers from law enforcement agencies in the region poured into the area around the Morehouse Parish Courthouse. As remote-control robot was used to look into the room where it was believed the shooting started. At 4 p.m., several percussion devices were discharged and SWAT team members swarmed into the vacant room.
Dennis said investigators aren't certain how Smith may have left the area around the hotel. He said one report was received stating she got into a dark-colored Dodge pickup truck. Dennis also said Smith was wanted for questioning in connection with a double homicide in the Houston, Texas area. A car outside the room where Smith and the unidentified suspect were staying was reported stolen from the Houston area.
"This woman needs to turn herself in to any law enforcement agency," Freeman said late Friday night, "because she's going to get caught."
Some time after 7 p.m., Gov. Kathleen Blanco called Bastrop Mayor Clarence Hawkins to offer her condolences and support. Hawkins said he was appreciative of Blanco's gesture.
