Officer Identified As Mario Moreno

SAN ANTONIO -- A man police were chasing shot and killed a detective and in turn was gunned down by police Friday afternoon at an apartment complex in the Medical Center area.
The shooting happened at 1:45 p.m. at the Villas Of St. Moritz at 7221 Lamb Road, where police said officers were trying to arrest a man for a shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon at the Sundance Apartments in the 4600 block of Gardendale.
A woman at the complex got the man to come out of an apartment, but when police approached to take him into custody, he took off running, police said.
The man then turned around and pulled out a shotgun he was hiding and fired the weapon, hitting Detective Mario Moreno in the face, police said.
Moreno, who was a member of the Repeat Offender Program, was transported by a police cruiser to University Hospital, where he died, police said.
Officers returned fire and killed the suspect, police said.
"I'm heartbroken right now," Police Chief Bill McManus said. "It's a stark wake-up call to how dangerous it is out here dealing with these types of suspects."
Moreno had been on the force for 11 years.
"Detective Moreno was truly a nice guy," McManus said. "Everyone liked him. He had a very good reputation."
Mayor Phil Hardberger, who was en route to China, offered his condolences to Moreno's family.
"I, the City Council and all the people of San Antonio join the Moreno family in their grief at this time," Hardberger said. "We will miss Mario. Our tears join the family's tears. Our prayers and condolences are with them."
Moreno leaves behind a wife and two young children.
The last SAPD officer to be killed in the line of duty was John Wheeler, who was killed in October 2005 when his cruiser burst into flames after it was rear-ended by a drunken driver who was speeding in excess of 100 mph."Regulators, we regulate any stealin' of his property and we're damn good too.
