Two Officers Wounded in Bronx Gun Battle (NYPD)
Two Officers Wounded in Bronx Gun Battle
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Two veteran New York City police detectives were grazed by bullets and a suspect is said to be in the hospital in critical condition after a gun battle in the Bronx Wednesday morning.
1010 WINS reporter Terry Sheridan said the shooting happened at about 5:20 a.m. on Webster Avenue near East 188th Street, south of Fordham University.
At a Wednesday morning press conference held at St. Barnabas Hospital, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly reported that the injured officers are veteran detectives. One officer was grazed in the forehead and the other officer was grazed in the leg.
The detectives are identified as Daniel Rivera, 41, and William Gonzalez, 41.
Officials said the detectives were serving a warrant on Jermaine Taylor for a shooting in July. Taylor apparently pulled an air conditioner out of a second floor window and jumped, breaking his pelvis. Taylor had a 9-millimeter semi-automatic gun on him and he fired six shots before trying to climb a fence, according to police.
Officers fired 13 shots but it is unclear if Taylor was hit. Taylor is in serious condition at Jacobi Hospital.
