Montana Highway Trooper Killed in Crash

A Montana Highway Patrol trooper died in the line of duty Tuesday morning when his squad car collided almost head-on with a pickup truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The crash occurred about 9:45 a.m. on U.S. 2 between Reserve Drive and Rose Crossing northeast of Kalispell.
The patrolman, whose name has not been released, died on the scene.
The Dodge pickup was in the northbound turn lane when it appears the driver looked down, crossed into oncoming traffic and collided almost head-on with the southbound unmarked patrol car, according to emergency personnel at the scene.
After the collision, the pickup went airborne and landed on its passenger side near the shoulder of the road, according to Terry Werner, a passing motorist who witnessed the accident.
The driver of the pickup truck was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center with a severely broken leg and other injuries.
The wreck closed the highway to traffic for several hours.
