Cause of officer's death unknown (Ontario, CA)
By Mark Petix, Staff Writer
ONTARIO - Cpl. Jose "Tony" Llamas, an Ontario police officer known for his hard work and warm smile, died Saturday.
He was 36.
Police say Llamas was found unresponsive in his Fontana home Saturday morning. He was taken to a local hospital but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
Police Cpl. Jeff Crittenden says Llamas appeared to die of natural causes.
"We don't know if it was heart related," Crittenden said. "We just don't know.
"Tony was very active and involved and above the curve physically. It's hard all around."
Llamas finished second in his class at the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Academy and joined the Ontario Police Department in 2001.
He was promoted to the rank of corporal in October.
During his time with the department, he was a training instructor in CPR, weaponless defense, impact weapons and chemical agents.
He served as a member of the Honor Guard Unit and the SWAT team. He was assigned to the narcotics division and was a volunteer at the Police Athletic League Youth Center.
In announcing Llamas' death, Crittenden wrote that he had a passion for life.
"The first thing family and friends remembered `Tony' for was greeting you with a (heartwarming) smile," he wrote. "His love for police work was displayed in his high work ethics."
Crittenden said in 2003, Llamas received an individual excellence award from the department for work that led to the arrest
of a suspect in a hit-and-run that left a child with a severe head injury.
Llamas is survived by his wife of 16 years, Feliccia, and three children, Jose III, Genevieve and Maleah.
He is also survived by his father and mother, Jose Sr. and Guadalupe Llamas; grandfather Alfredo Llamas; his brother Peter; sisters Lupe Artis and Myrna Llamas; and 13 nieces and nephews.
He also has eight godsons and one goddaughter.
Crittenden said funeral arrangements are pending.
