NEW ORLEANS --
Elton Phillips, the man believed to be involved in the fatal shooting of a veteran New Orleans detective, surrendered to police Saturday.
Thelonious Dukes, who served for 19 years with the New Orleans Police Department, was shot at his home during a robbery last month.
"We're not quite sure if he's the gunman, but we know that he's involved in this. We are searching for him as a suspect because we do know that he is involved in this situation," Police Superintendent Warren Riley said of Phillips.
According to investigators, Dukes was pulling into his driveway in New Orleans East on Oct. 13 when two armed men came up and forced him into his house. Once inside, Dukes was able to get his gun, and there was a shootout.
Dukes was shot twice -- once in the leg and once in the stomach. He died early Friday morning of his injuries.
After surrendering to police Saturday, Phillips was booked in connection with an armed robbery that took place Oct. 11.
The 20-year-old Phillips is accused of robbing a person at gunpoint at a gas station on Gen. Degaulle Drive, taking cash, jewelry and a cell phone from the victim.
Former District Attorney Eddie Jordan identified Phillips as the man who came to his Algiers home Oct. 12 asking for help after a car wreck a few blocks away.
"I immediately got in touch with police after I saw his picture on the television," Jordan said.
According to a police report, Phillips dropped off Cheri Robinson, Jordan's girlfriend, at the home she and Jordan share just minutes before the robbery.Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence.

This entire incident stinks with the stench of old-style New Orleans corruption. Katrina didn't wash the streets, she just expanded the sewers.
Rest easy, brother.
