Wis. Deputy Dies After Being Hit By Car
BLOOMER, Wis. (WCCO) ― A Chippewa County deputy was hit and killed by a driver following a semi truck fire on Highway 53 just south of Bloomer.
A sheriff's department spokesman said Jason Zunker, 31, responded to a call about a truck fire about 9:30 last night. The spokesman says the deputy was running traffic control when he was injured.
According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, Zunker was with the Sheriff's Department for four years. The 31-year-old deputy was originally from the Superior, Wis. area.
The deputy was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Eau Claire. He died at 12:10 p.m. Saturday, according to the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
The State Patrol also said the driver of the vehicle that hit the deputy was a 21-year-old woman who was driving alone at the time. She has not yet been ticketed or arrested.
The incident happened in western Wisconsin about 100 miles east of Minneapolis.
Authorities shut down southbound Highway 53 for about an hour and a half last night while they dealt with the burning truck. It belonged to Wal-Mart.The views expressed in the above post are the sole opinion of the author and do not reflect any official position by the author's employer and/or municipality.
