ELIZABETHTOWN - Hardin County Sheriff's Deputy Elizabeth Edwards, 26, Rosiclare, was killed when her car struck a tree in Elizabethtown Sunday morning.
The sheriff's department received a report of the accident at 7:45 a.m. Sunday, according to Renee Stark, secretary to Sheriff Carl Cox.
Edwards struck the tree on state Route 146 just inside the Elizabethtown city limits while responding to a reported motor vehicle accident on Tower Rock Road, Stark said.
"We're not sure exactly what happened. It is under investigation by the State Police at this time. She somehow lost control of the car and hit a tree.
"It could be she hit a piece of black ice on the road, we don't know," Stark said.
Cox Funeral Home was finalizing funeral arrangements this morning.
Edwards was hired as a full-time deputy in January. Last year she worked for the department as a dispatcher and then became a bailiff at the courthouse.
"She became intrigued with law enforcement after being around it with court security and eventually decided, if we would send her, she would go through the training to become a full-time officer," Stark said.
Edwards was still in training in Carbondale and would likely have completed her training in the summer.
Edwards was the daughter of Nancie "Susie" Edwards of Rosiclare and A. Wayne and Michelle Edwards of Cave-In-Rock. She had two sisters, Waynette Bryant of Saline County and Shealean Cullum, who is a full-time dispatcher with the Hardin County Sheriff's Department.Last edited by slamdunc; 02-13-06 at 04:43 PM.
