Baton Rouge Police K-9 Officer Mark Beck, 33, of Zachary, died in a late night car crash Monday, according to Louisiana State Police.
A 1996 Freightliner tractor/trailer carrying methanol was northbound on US 61 and activated his hazard lights as the tractor/trailer approached the railroad tracks just north of Thomas Road. He came to stop as required by law due to the nature of his cargo, said State Police. For unknown reasons, the 2005 Chevy Impala Beck was driving hit the rear of the tractor/trailer.
State Police responded to the crash around 11:30 p.m. and Beck was transported from the scene by Acadian Ambulance Air Med. He was pronounced dead at Earl K. Long Hospital.
Officer Beck’s K-9 was also in the vehicle and survived the crash.
The driver of the Freightliner, Bernard Jones, 63, of Prairieville, was not injured in the crash. Both drivers were properly restrained.
