SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. -- Authorities said a 15-year-old motorist was arrested after a high-speed chase, during which a Dane County sheriff's deputy was struck and seriously injured Friday afternoon.
VIDEO: Watch The Report
Elise Schaeffer, public information officer for the Dane County Sheriff's Office, said a deputy was struck by the fleeing car while trying to deploy road spikes at Highway 151 near County Highway V in Sun Prairie. Schaeffer said the vehicle swerved to avoid hitting the spikes and hit the deputy instead.
"Assisting deputies terminated the pursuit and began immediately rendering aid to the critically injured deputy," said Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney.
The deputy, whose named wasn't released, was transported by Med-Flight to University of Wisconsin Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries just after 2 p.m. Friday, WISC-TV reported. The deputy was in stable condition Friday night.
"I'm glad to say that he's really out of the woods. He was very critically injured, but currently is undergoing surgery. He has non-life-threatening injuries. He appears to be stable, but is nonetheless critically injured," Mahoney said.
Madison police started the chase after a routine traffic stop on Milwaukee Street just off of Stoughton Road. Police said the car fled and officers suspended the chase, which was later picked up by Dane County sheriff's deputies.
Authorities said after the deputy was struck, the chase resumed in Cottage Grove, with the driver heading south on Interstate 94. The State Patrol took the lead and again deployed road spikes.
"This was the third attempt to deploy road spikes. The final attempt in Johnson Creek did deflate the tires on the vehicle and bring it to a successful conclusion," Mahoney said.
Authorities said they arrested the teen suspected in the pursuit east of Johnson Creek in Jefferson County. Authorities said Friday night that the teen is being held at the Dane County Juvenile Reception Center on tentative charges of eluding and operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent.
The Dane County Sheriff's Office is conducting the criminal investigation and officials said they expect more charges to be forthcoming.
Authorities said the car was believed to have been stolen in Stoughton.
A car matching the description of the car in the chase was reported missing from the Serenity House, a residential care center for youth in Stoughton. Serenity House said it is working with law enforcement, but authorities are not saying if the suspect is connected with the facility.
Highway 151 northbound was closed near the crossroad of County Highway V for a few hours Friday afternoon and motorists experienced significant traffic delays in the area. The northbound lanes were reopened Friday evening, WISC-TV reported.Somebody Please, what the hell is that smell?

We dallied under
Vine maples and sapling alders
Searched for lady slippers
But instead
Found blackberry riots and
Desiccated branches
An old skid road
Brought ghost ferns and
Hollows filled with
Skunk cabbage
While waves wrapped
Intricate lacings of weeds
'Round mule spinners
His cyanotic eyes
Were hard enough to make
The sun turn tail and
Tender enough to attract me
To his world of illusion
